They Must Come to the National Assembly with Their Heads Bowed: Ruben Rubinyan's Statement
The ruling party will not appeal to the Constitutional Court to strip the mandates from the opposition. Ruben Rubinyan, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, stated this during a press conference following a session of the National Assembly Council.
“Respect for the votes given by the people is part of our political beliefs. We respect the votes given by the people, and we believe that the behavior and philosophy of the opposition should be a concern for voters, and I think that the part of the public that voted for them will draw appropriate conclusions,” said Rubinyan.
Rubinyan also added, “If the opposition thinks that we should appeal to the CC and throw them a lifeline to escape from the National Assembly, they are mistaken. They must come to the National Assembly with their heads bowed, they should look into our eyes and should not be able to repeat what they have said in the streets.”
In response to the remark that opposition members have stated they will not come to the National Assembly under the government's agenda, Rubinyan replied, “I also say that they will come with their heads bowed. Whether they come or not, we will discuss it.”
It should be noted that the National Assembly Council had convened to discuss the issue of appealing to the Constitutional Court to strip several opposition deputies of their mandates. This specifically concerns the termination of the powers of deputies from two factions. The names of only independent deputy Taguhi Tovmasyan (formerly from the “I Have Honor” faction) and independent deputy Ishkhan Zakaryan (formerly from the “I Have Honor” faction) are not included in the list.
