US Administration to Seek Additional $30 Billion from Congress for Pandemic Response
The Biden Administration is set to approach Congress requesting approval for an additional allocation of $30 billion to combat the ongoing spread of coronavirus in the country, according to a report by the Associated Press (AP), citing sources.
According to their information, $17.9 billion is planned to be spent on vaccines and treatments, $4.9 billion for testing, $3 billion for treating uninsured individuals affected by the virus, and $3.7 billion to prepare for the potential emergence of new variants of the virus.
AP notes that it remains unclear how Congress will respond to this additional funding request. Republicans are expected to seek to direct the primary funds toward combating the spread of the virus domestically, particularly with the aim of assisting businesses. Meanwhile, progressive Democrats are advocating for increased efforts to assist poorer nations with vaccination initiatives.
The United States continues to lead globally in both the number of infections and deaths attributed to the virus.
