EU Criticizes Cavusoglu's Statements
The European Union has called on Turkey to respect Greece's sovereignty and has described the statements made by Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu regarding Greek islands as counterproductive, according to Interfax news agency.
According to a statement released by the EU's foreign service, Cavusoglu's comments contradict efforts to de-escalate tensions in the eastern Mediterranean region. The statement emphasizes that Greece's sovereignty over these islands is not in question.
"Turkey must respect that, refrain from provocative statements and actions regarding this matter, unconditionally adhere to friendly relations, and work to resolve any disputes peacefully," the statement reads.
Recently, Turkey's foreign minister had once again raised the issue of demilitarization and sovereignty of several Greek islands in an interview. He stated that ongoing militarization of these islands by Athens calls into question their sovereignty.
