Omicron Variant Spread in the US Reaches Record Numbers
The number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 is set to reach an all-time high in the United States, surpassing the record figures recorded last January, attributed to the spread of the Omicron variant. This has been reported by Reuters.
Since the end of December, hospitalizations have increased as Omicron has rapidly overtaken Delta as the dominant COVID-19 strain in the US. Although experts suggest that Omicron is likely less deadly than previous strains, US health officials have warned that hospitals are overwhelmed with patients infected with the Omicron variant.
On January 6, the United States reported 662,000 new COVID-19 cases, marking the fourth highest daily tally recorded in the country.
