Turkologist Compares Ruben Rubinyan's Appointment to Match Between English Chelsea and a Regional Team
The appointment of Ruben Rubinyan as Armenia's special representative for the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations is problematic. This was stated in an interview with 24News by Ruben Melikonyan, dean of Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Oriental Studies, doctor of historical sciences, and professor, who addressed the theme of the appointments of special representatives from Turkey and Armenia for the normalization of relations.
“First and foremost, Armenia is currently in an unfavorable position for the establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations, at the weakest negotiating starting point. Over the past 30 years, there have been several attempts to normalize Armenian-Turkish relations, with negotiations held at varying intensities, but Armenia has never been represented on a weak negotiating basis or by such unprofessional personnel,” emphasized the professor.
Regarding the representatives of the two countries, Professor Ruben Melikonyan noted that of course the weight categories are different. “Let us not underestimate the Turkish diplomatic school. Turkish diplomacy is one of the important institutional structures of that state, which has continuing traditions. We must acknowledge that there are many professional Turkish diplomats, one of whom is Kilic. As for the Armenian representative, I believe that the prevailing influence has not been professional approaches, but party affiliation. The professional and career trajectory of this individual, if we can call it a trajectory, is very weak. Moreover, the individual’s positions and views on Armenia’s interests are also problematic. Therefore, I believe that what is happening now primarily benefits Turkey. Because it seems like a sports competition where English Chelsea is facing a regional team from an undeveloped country,” the Turkologist noted.
