Turkish Basketball Player Known for Anti-Erdogan Views Changes Surname
Enes Kanter, a Turkish basketball player for the NBA's Boston Celtics, known for his anti-Erdogan views and persecuted by Turkish authorities, has changed his surname to Freedom, which translates to 'liberty' in English. This was reported by ermenihaber.am.
Turkish authorities accuse Kanter of having ties to the Gülen movement, which is considered terrorist in Turkey. In 2018, Kanter's father was sentenced to 15 years in prison, a punishment the athlete links to his sharp criticisms of Turkey and Erdogan.
