Police Reports on the Detention of Khosrov Harutyunyan

On May 17, former Prime Minister Khosrov Harutyunyan and another individual were detained by the police on suspicion of assault near Freedom Square. This information was provided by the Public Relations and Information Department of the Police of the Republic of Armenia.

The police indicated that the circumstances of the incident are being investigated, and materials are being prepared.

Khosrov Harutyunyan's attorney, David Avagyan, made several statements on his Facebook page regarding the incident, noting that there was a clear provocation by a citizen at Freedom Square, specifically highlighting that the individual displayed indecent behavior by shouting insults at various people publicly. According to him, Harutyunyan attempted to calm down this citizen, who then pushed Harutyunyan in response.

The lawyer asserts that Harutyunyan did not respond to this provocation in any way, yet police officers also detained him. "Police officers, being present at the scene and witnessing the incident, had at least the opportunity to differentiate between the provocateur and the individual exhibiting antisocial and illegal behavior and should have taken measures proportionate to the situation, making the detention of Mr. Harutyunyan clearly unjustified and unlawful. In any case, such a harsh method of detention was not proportional. The police officers at the station acted professionally and respectfully," wrote Avagyan.

The attorney also reported that Khosrov Harutyunyan has been released.
