Lukashenko to Sign New Decree Revealing Who Will Assume Presidential Powers in Case of His Death
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko plans to sign a decree regarding the transfer of presidential powers to the Security Council if necessary. This was reported by BelTA.
Earlier, Lukashenko had announced his intention to sign an important decree. According to him, this document should become one of the most significant decisions of his presidency. The leader of the country did not provide further details, and 'experts' have begun to express opinions that 'Lukashenko will hand Belarus over to Russia' or that 'a Russian military base will be established in Belarus.'
However, during a visit to the Navahrudak region, Alexander Lukashenko explained in a conversation with journalists that his announced decisions will pertain exclusively to the internal situation of the country and will address the question of what will happen if opponents of the authorities manage to kill the president.
“Tell me, if there is no president tomorrow, can you guarantee that everything will be fine? No. Therefore, in this case, I will sign a decree in the coming days on how power will be structured in Belarus. The Security Council will be authorized in this matter. It is necessary to immediately declare a state of emergency or even martial law until movement is observed at the border. And the Security Council must make a decision. Thus, I have said that I will sign this decree and determine who is to govern the country 'in case' of such a situation,” said Lukashenko.
Additionally, the Belarusian leader added that such necessity is unlikely to arise, but vigilance should not be lost.
