Joe Biden Set to Acknowledge Armenian Genocide, Wall Street Journal
U.S. President Joe Biden is preparing to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide carried out in the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing American officials.
In March, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee urged the White House leader to recognize the Armenian Genocide. According to the publication's sources, Biden intends to classify the mass killings and deportations of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 as genocide.
It is noteworthy that President Joe Biden responded to a letter from Armenian historians regarding the use of the term “genocide”. The letter stated that the U.S. is facing numerous challenges, and such correspondence helps better understand how the Biden-Harris administration can be useful.
The Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire is considered the first genocide of the 20th century. Despite the recognition by many countries, Turkey, as the successor of the Ottoman Empire, has traditionally denied the accusations of genocide.
As of now, 49 out of 50 U.S. states have officially recognized the Armenian Genocide at the state level, but it has yet to be acknowledged at the federal level.
