EU Officially Does Not Recognize Belarus Election Results

The leaders of the European Union member states do not recognize the results of the Belarusian elections. This was announced today, August 19, by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, following the outcomes of an extraordinary summit held in Brussels.

According to Merkel, the voting process was neither free nor fair, and there were widespread violations. “We condemn the harsh repressions against the people, all political prisoners must be released immediately, and a national dialogue, as demanded by the opposition, is necessary. We stand by the peaceful protesters,” declared Merkel.

EU President Charles Michel also stated that sanctions would be imposed on a significant number of individuals responsible for violence and electoral fraud.
