US Congressional Staff to Visit Artsakh for Election Oversight

Several U.S. Congress members have announced that, at the invitation of the Nagorno-Karabakh side, their staff will travel to Artsakh to monitor the elections scheduled for March 31. This was reported by Voice of America.

Whether Azerbaijan recognizes the independence of Artsakh or not, life in the region will continue to evolve, believes Congresswoman Jackie Kanchelian Spier, who has Armenian roots. “It is very important that the democracy there remains ongoing,” she stated.

Among the congressional staff traveling to monitor the electoral process is James Johnson, a senior advisor to Congressman Frank Pallone. “I have studied and seen that the previous elections in Artsakh were free, fair, and transparent by all standards. We hope that these elections will also be free,” Johnson remarked.

Despite the decision of several Congress members, the U.S. Department of State has previously not recognized the elections held in the territory of Artsakh.
