According to data from the ERA5 analysis, on August 14, the average surface temperature of the Global Ocean rose to +21.08 °C. This is not only the highest figure of the year but also a record value for August 14 in the entire observation period. Levon Azizyan, the director of the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, announced this on his Facebook page.

“Currently, the temperature anomaly stands at +0.64 °C, significantly exceeding the figures recorded in previous years. Typically, the surface temperature of the Global Ocean has two peaks throughout the year: the first in the second half of March and the second in mid-August. Generally, the March peak is higher than that of August. However, in 2026, the picture has changed: against the backdrop of the intensification of El Niño, the surface temperature of the ocean in August exceeded the maximum recorded in March,” Azizyan wrote.
