Eurovision with New Rules: Geopolitical Risks Could Strip Winning Country of Hosting Rights

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has announced changes to the rules of Eurovision, stating that the winning broadcaster will automatically lose the right to host the next competition if their country is involved in armed conflict or is in a complex geopolitical situation that could affect the security of the event.

These new rules were confirmed following the annual review of regulations and will take effect for the 2027 contest. In contentious cases, the decision regarding the feasibility of holding the show will be made based on an evaluation by an independent security body. If the winning country is deemed unsuitable for organizing the contest, the EBU will appoint an alternative broadcaster that will assume all rights and responsibilities for hosting Eurovision.

Organizers have stated that the changes aim to ensure fairness, transparency, and security for the competition, as well as to protect artists and participants. Additionally, starting from 2027, the EBU will raise the minimum age for Eurovision participants from 16 to 18.
