Armenian Church Being Restored in Turkey

In Turkey's southern region, specifically in the Iskenderun district of Hatay province, the Armenian church known as 'Forty Martyrs' is undergoing restoration, according to Turkish media reports. The church was significantly damaged due to the powerful earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023. It was built in 1876 and has a history of around 150 years.

Yusuf Tabashi, the chairman of the foundation overseeing the Forty Martyrs Armenian Church, stated that the restoration work will be carried out with the support of 5 million Turkish lira, approximately 105,000 dollars, provided by the government.

The earthquake also caused damage to the altar area of the church. During the restoration process, plans include repairing the church roof, restoring the floor, addressing drainage issues, reconstructing the altars, and restoring the external appearance of the damaged walls. Additionally, associated buildings and shops that contribute to the church’s income will also be restored.
