Trump Rejects Zelensky's Request for 300 Patriot Missiles: The Atlantic

The U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's request to provide 300 Patriot missile defense systems to Kyiv to counter expected ballistic threats this winter. This was reported by The Atlantic, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

According to the publication, the Ukrainian side requested the 300 missiles to protect energy infrastructure and fend off possible attacks in the winter months, but Trump did not support the request. Instead of supplying ready-made missiles, the U.S. President proposed granting Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missiles domestically. However, it is noted that Kyiv will not be able to start serial production of these missiles for several years.

The Atlantic also reports that during the meeting with Trump, Zelensky asked for permission to use the Starlink satellite network to strike targets in Russian territory. He stated that this was necessary to hit small and mobile targets, particularly the launchers for ballistic missiles.

The request was made during a closed portion of talks held at the White House on July 28. According to sources, Trump did not provide a definitive answer, stating that he would consider the issue.

In an interview with the Financial Times on July 31, Trump stated that he had not yet decided whether Washington would grant Kyiv a license to produce Patriot missiles, although the possibility is being discussed. In a public appeal on July 29 to Trump, Zelensky had requested the provision of 300 Patriot missiles. He also indicated that the Ukrainian side is discussing the possibility of converting Ukrainian made ballistic missiles into equivalents of Patriot missiles with American defense companies.
