A citizen in Martuni rescued a 4-month-old cub of the Caucasian brown bear, listed in the Red Book of Armenia, from a dog attack and transferred it to a shelter.

On July 28, 2026, at approximately 12:20 PM, the Environmental and Mining Inspectorate of the Gegharkunik Territorial Division received a report from a Martuni resident, V.V., regarding a discovered bear cub. Inspectors determined on-site that at the 15th kilometer of the Martuni-Getap highway, the citizen had spotted a cub approximately 4 months old, belonging to the Caucasian brown bear listed in the Red Book of Armenia, which was threatened by an attack from 6-7 dogs.

V.V. managed to avert the danger posed to the animal and transported it to an auxiliary building adjacent to his home. A subsequent external examination by the inspectors revealed no injuries on the cub’s body.

To ensure proper care for the bear cub registered in the Red Book and to facilitate its future return to the wild, the animal was transferred the same day to the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Values (FPWC). It was then moved to a rescue center specifically designed for young wildlife.
