Trump Thanks Lukashenko
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has expressed his "warmest gratitude" to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for the release of 250 political prisoners following talks between Lukashenko and U.S. Presidential Special Envoy John Khoul in Minsk on March 19. Trump noted on TruthSocial that this action brings the total number of political prisoners released in Belarus since May 2025 to over 500.
The release of political prisoners in Belarus was a result of negotiations aimed at normalizing relations with Washington and seeking the lifting of sanctions in exchange for easing repression. Following the agreement on March 19, Washington has agreed to ease restrictions on Belarus's financial sector.
