Trump Will Not Change Britain's Stance on Greenland Issue, Says Starmer
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has stated that he will not yield to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the issue of Greenland, despite threats of tariffs.
“The threats of tariffs to pressure allies are absolutely unacceptable. I want to be absolutely clear: I will not yield, and the UK will not yield its principles and values regarding the future of Greenland under the threat of tariffs,” the Prime Minister said.
He also emphasized that the future of Greenland “belongs solely to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.” He asserted that Trump’s criticism regarding the UK's agreement to hand over the Chagos Islands was an attempt to pressure his stance.
“Trump used those words yesterday with a clear purpose: to pressure me and the UK on my values and principles regarding the future of Greenland. He wants me to concede my position, and I have no intention of doing so,” Starmer declared.
He added that the UK is ready for “constructive cooperation” with the U.S. but will firmly maintain its position on fundamental issues of sovereignty.
