Israel Announces New Strikes on Hezbollah Targets in Lebanon
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced new strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, accusing the group of violating the ceasefire.
"In response to the ongoing violations of the ceasefire by Hezbollah, the IDF has begun attacking terrorist targets of Hezbollah in several regions of Lebanon," stated a press release.
Earlier, the Lebanese army announced that it had completed the first phase of a plan to transfer Hezbollah's weapons under government control in the country's south. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the Lebanese government's efforts to disarm Hezbollah but deemed them insufficient.
On the night of November 27, 2024, following nearly 14 months of continuous escalation, a ceasefire came into effect between Israel and Lebanon, according to an American peace plan. According to the agreement, within 60 days after the ceasefire, the Lebanese army was to take control of territories in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah's forces and infrastructure were to be withdrawn north of the Litani River, which flows 20-30 kilometers away from the border with Israel at various points.
During this period, Israel was to fully withdraw its armed forces from Hezbollah; however, it maintained the right to respond to any violations of the ceasefire by Hezbollah. After this time, Israel withdrew its forces from Lebanon but retained a military presence at five border posts in Lebanon. The Lebanese army, for its part, was also unable to fully secure Hezbollah's retreat north of the Litani or dismantle the movement's infrastructure.
