Disparities in the Ecclesiastical System: Vahagan Aleksanyan's Response
National Assembly member Vahagan Aleksanyan made a post on his Facebook page addressing the attitude within the Armenian Apostolic Church towards married and celibate clergy.
The deputy noted that in some cases, priests who are honestly married and have exemplary families are persecuted within the ecclesiastical system. According to Aleksanyan, such clergymen are frequently limited in their opportunities to attain higher ecclesiastical ranks such as abbot, priest, or bishop.
He emphasized that priests in legitimate and righteous marriages often find themselves deprived of progress, while there are no similar restrictions for clergy who breach their vows of celibacy.
In his post, the deputy stated that it is necessary to reevaluate the approaches within ecclesiastical structures to ensure justice and equal opportunities. Aleksanyan also quoted a passage from the Gospel: 'Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled' (Matthew 5:6).
