EU Council Approves Ban on Russian Gas Transit
The EU Council has approved a proposal to ban the purchase of gas from Russia starting January 1, 2028. According to the plan, the phase-out of Russian raw materials will be gradual.
The ban will be implemented beginning January 1, 2026, with a transitional period for existing contracts. Specifically, short-term contracts signed until June 17, 2025, can remain in effect until June 17, 2026, while long-term contracts will be allowed to continue until January 1, 2028.
It has also been confirmed that there will be a ban on the transit of Russian gas through the EU to other countries starting from January 1, 2026.
