Armenia Passes Law Requiring EU Membership Aspiration: Mirzoyan

Armenia may submit its application for European Union membership within a month, possibly even next year. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, in an interview with Deutsche Welle.

According to the minister, a law has been adopted in Armenia that obligates the government to strive for membership in the European Union. “I cannot say exactly when we will submit the application. It could be next month, or perhaps next year. It depends on many factors. At the same time, as I mentioned, this is our official policy,” Mirzoyan said.

The minister reminded that Armenia is working with the European Union and has already significantly deepened bilateral relations, having a comprehensive and enhanced partnership agreement in place. The parties have initiated the process of easing the visa regime, which, according to the minister, is progressing quite successfully.

Furthermore, he noted that official Yerevan and Brussels are negotiating several new documents and have completed work on a new partnership program, which could be signed in the coming three months. “We see that the citizens of the Republic of Armenia are demanding us to move forward. We also hear some criticism from them regarding possible delays and lengthy procedures,” Mirzoyan added.
