The Important Thing: The Organizer of the Pashinyan-Aliyev Meeting is the USA, Not Russia - Azerbaijani MP
Washington will become the stage for a historic event. At the White House, US President Donald Trump will mediate trilateral talks involving Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Media reports indicate that the parties will not sign a peace treaty but will draft a 'letter of intentions', which will serve as the basis for further agreements. Former Azerbaijani ambassador to Iran Javanshir Akhundov commented on the upcoming meeting in Washington, as reported by 'Minval Politika'.
The expert pointed out that signing the document in the form of a memorandum is a logical step that reflects the parties’ positions on key issues, mainly in two areas: territorial claims enshrined in the Armenian Constitution and the opening of the Zangezur corridor.
'The current version of the RA Constitution actually hinders the advancement of the peace process. Armenia needs to align it with the new realities. This is not easy. Presidential elections are approaching, and only after that a referendum on this issue can be held,' Akhundov stated.
The diplomat emphasized the importance of the venue for the negotiations. 'The organizer is the USA, not Russia. This is a crucial point. The fact that the document will be signed in Washington, rather than in the territory of the Russian Federation, is a signal of a change in the foreign policy vector. America wants to act as a guarantor of the agreements,' he noted.
He also highlighted that this move sends an important message to Iran, which has interests in the region.
