Turkey's Opposition Demands Early Presidential Elections
The leader of Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, has once again suggested holding early presidential elections in November. He stated that this proposal would be beneficial for the current president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who, according to him, could only run if early elections were held.
During a speech in parliament on Wednesday, Erdoğan responded to the opposition's calls for early parliamentary elections on November 2, asserting that such elections were not on the government's agenda and that the elections would take place as originally planned in 2028.
The opposition already has its own presidential candidate, Istanbul's mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was recently jailed. Previously, the publication 'Özel' reported that the opposition had gathered over 20 million signatures to support İmamoğlu as a presidential candidate.
