Protesters Spend Night Outside Parliament Building in Tbilisi
In Tbilisi, protesters have spent the night near the parliament building. This was reported by a TASS correspondent. They prevented government officials from accessing the memorial for the victims of the April 9, 1989 protest suppression.
On Tuesday evening, protesters gathered on Rustaveli Avenue. Among them were family members of those detained during the protests last December. Their goal is to prevent Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and other officials from reaching the memorial located in front of the parliament building.
Every year on April 9, senior officials from the country visit this site to honor the memory of the victims of the 1989 events. On this day, Soviet troops dispersed participants of a protest organized for Georgia's independence, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 people.
