Musk's Request to Trump
Elon Musk, head of the U.S. Government Efficiency Office (DOGE), has personally asked U.S. President Donald Trump to reconsider the decision to impose tariffs. However, his requests have been in vain, according to The Washington Post (WP), citing sources.
Last weekend, Musk criticized White House adviser Peter Navarro on social media platform X, who has played a key role in developing pricing plans. Musk, CEO of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, has long believed that the tariffs are detrimental to his company, which relies on the U.S. and China as its main production and consumption centers, notes The Washington Post.
According to the newspaper, many businesspeople who supported Trump’s candidacy in the presidential elections are astonished by his decision to impose such high tariffs. They are also “very disappointed that they could not have a greater influence on the President’s policies,” WP’s sources said.
On April 2, Donald Trump signed an executive order setting import tariffs between 10-50% on goods from 185 countries. Beginning April 5, the U.S. also established a minimum basic tariff of 10% for all countries.
