Ukraine Considers the Possibility of Restoring Its Nuclear Arsenal
The Ukrainian authorities are seriously considering the possibility of restoring their nuclear arsenal. This was reported by the German newspaper Bild, citing a senior Ukrainian official. He noted that Ukraine would not accept a second attack from Russia towards Kyiv and, in such a case, would restore its nuclear arsenal, which the country voluntarily abandoned in the 1990s.
“We have the materials, we have the knowledge. If there is an order, it will take us just a few weeks to acquire the first bomb,” warned the interviewee from the publication involved in arms supplies.
It is worth recalling that today, during a European Council meeting in Brussels, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reminded that under the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, with the participation of Russia, the USA, and Great Britain, Ukraine was promised protection of its territorial integrity and sovereignty in exchange for renouncing nuclear weapons. However, that document is no longer functioning, hence, the country’s security could be guaranteed either by joining NATO or by possessing nuclear weapons.
