In Case of War, the Republic of Korea Will Be Annihilated: Statement
In North Korea, over the course of two days, on October 14 and 15, more than 1.4 million people expressed their desire to join the People's Army, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
"In case of war, the Republic of Korea will be annihilated. They want war, and we will gladly destroy them," the statement read.
It was noted that retired officers and soldiers, along with many students, expressed their determination to enlist. The situation on the Korean Peninsula has recently escalated. The day before, North Korea had blown up several sections of inter-Korean roads within its territory.
Official Pyongyang warned that it intends to "completely disconnect" North Korea from South Korea. The countries are connected by roads and railways that had been perceived as symbols of cooperation between them.
Recently, the North Korean military announced it would take "significant military steps" to entirely sever its territory from neighboring South Korea. This announcement came after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un officially scrapped the long-standing policy aimed at peaceful reunification with South Korea.
The announcement stated that roads and railways in North Korea connected to the south would be completely cut off, blocking access along the border. According to the South Korean military, since January, Pyongyang has strengthened its border defenses by mining areas, constructing anti-tank traps, and dismantling railway infrastructure.
