Armenia and Azerbaijan Reach Agreement on 16 Points of Peace Treaty: Alen Simonyan
The President of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, announced that Armenia and Azerbaijan are on the brink of reaching an agreement to establish peace.
Simonyan made this statement during his speech at the general discussions of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
“Regarding the establishment of peace, I want to inform you that Armenia and Azerbaijan are on the threshold of reaching an agreement. In the context of the fact that the peace process seriously began months ago, Azerbaijan sought our agreement on five internationally recognized points. I am pleased to announce that today we have reached an agreement on 16 points. Perfection should no longer be the enemy of good. The time has come to establish peace; the time for peace is now. We invite Azerbaijan to demonstrate political will, seize the moment, and join us to make the possible a reality. Armenia is ready to sign a peace treaty even today,” Simonyan stated.
On September 11, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced during a Q&A session in the National Assembly that Armenia is offering Azerbaijan a peace treaty, including the 16 articles that have been agreed upon so far. “We have agreed upon the content for all 16 articles; for three articles, the content is partially agreed upon compared to the original text, that is, 13 plus 3, meaning a treaty with 16 articles,” Pashinyan noted.
Pashinyan clarified that the peace treaty originally had 18 articles, but the article on unblocking was removed. According to Pashinyan, one of the remaining 17 articles has not been agreed upon at all.
