EU Ready to Abandon Russian Gas, Says Kadri Simson
The share of Russian gas in the EU's imports has sharply decreased since the start of Russia's war against Ukraine. The European Union is prepared to completely abandon supplies from Moscow.
This was announced by the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the European Commission's website. According to her, the share of Russian gas in the EU's imports has fallen from 45% in 2021 to 18% in June 2024, while imports from reliable partners like Norway and the USA have increased.
"The EU is ready to live without Russian natural gas, which was transited through Ukraine," she stated. It is worth noting that the contract for gas transit from the Russian Federation through Ukrainian territory to Europe expires at the end of this year.
