Harris Secures Enough Votes to Run for President: Report
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough votes from Democratic Party delegates to run for the presidency, according to a report by the Associated Press, which cited an unofficial survey indicating that Harris has received support from 2,668 Democratic delegates. The required number for nomination is 1,976. The AP notes that the survey is not official and its numbers are not final.
RIA Novosti reported that Harris compared the Democratic primaries in the U.S. to an amusement park ride called "American Roller Coasters." She stated, "I understand this because we are all filled with a lot of mixed emotions." On July 21, President Biden announced his exit from the race.
Democratic representatives began discussing the need to find a replacement for Biden after the 81-year-old president's unsuccessful performance in a debate against Republican candidate Donald Trump. CBS reported on July 22 that Harris may announce her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination on August 1.
The presidential elections in the U.S. are scheduled to take place on November 5, 2024.
