Biden Calls on Senate to Approve Assistance for Kyiv
U.S. President Joe Biden has thanked House Speaker Republican Mike Johnson and Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for approving the assistance package for American allies. The President has urged the Senate to make a decision as soon as possible so that he can sign it and immediately send weapons to Ukraine.
“I urge the Senate to send that package to my desk sooner so that I can sign it, and we can immediately send arms and equipment to Ukraine to meet their urgent needs on the battlefield,” the President's statement said.
Biden noted that the aid package would provide “crucial support for Israel and Ukraine,” offer humanitarian assistance to Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, and other areas affected by conflicts and natural disasters, as well as “strengthen security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”
The House of Representatives approved the assistance package for allies the previous day, April 20. Among other things, it includes support for Ukraine and the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. Discussion of the bill in the Senate is expected on April 23.
