Restrictions on Vehicle Operations Without Winter Tires Proposed
The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure has proposed a new draft law to amend the Government's Decision No. 955-N dated June 28, 2007, to include a new condition for the operation of vehicles, which stipulates that depending on the months of the year, the operation of vehicles without appropriate winter tires will be prohibited.
The draft aims to reduce the number of road accidents caused by vehicles operating with inadequate tires under unfavorable weather conditions (from November 15 to March 31 inclusive). Vehicles that do not comply with these requirements will face fines according to Article 123, Part 1 of the Administrative Violations Code of the Republic of Armenia.
The rationale behind the proposal indicates that the period from November 15 to March 31 has been selected considering the average daily temperature and precipitation levels in the country. Additionally, the prohibition of vehicles with winter studded tires in June, July, and August is intended to enhance road safety and prevent damage to the road surface from metal studs.
It is noted that the adoption of these proposed amendments will help improve traffic safety under adverse weather conditions and reduce the number of road accidents, fatalities, and injuries.
