PHOTOS: North Korea's First Tactical Nuclear Submarine

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has unveiled a newly developed tactical nuclear submarine during a special ceremony, which, according to Pyongyang, is capable of conducting underwater nuclear strikes.  It is emphasized that this is the first submarine in North Korea equipped with tactical nuclear weapons. Reports indicate that the new submarine has already gone to sea.  Kim Jong Un has promised to "further strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrence capabilities" in both quantity and quality.

North Korea has long sought to enhance its arsenal with a submarine capable of carrying nuclear weapons and has been working on its development for years.  In turn, the BBC reports that submarines are quite difficult to detect underwater, meaning that Pyongyang could strike its enemies from the sea if its land-based weapons are destroyed by their forces.
