"If I had known it would be like this, I would have held him in my arms longer": Mother of a soldier missing in the 44-day war

The investigative outlet Hetq reports that the family of Gor Movsisyan, who went missing during the 44-day war, continues to search for their soldier. Gor is the youngest of three children in the family. His elder brother, Vazgen, was injured and discharged in 2016 from the positions in Talish.

In July 2019, the Movsisyan family sent their youngest son, Gor, for military service in Artsakh. He served in the Jrarakan military unit. Gor was last seen by his parents in December 2019 when he came home on leave. “His surprise visit was unexpected; everyone knew he was coming except for me. He loved to surprise us. When I said goodbye to my son before his leave, I held him tight, my heart filled with emotions. Now when I think about that day, I say to myself, if I had known it would be like this, I would have held him in my arms longer,” recalls Gor's mother, Nora Aleksanyan.

Gor's father, Norik, is a welder, recognized as a skilled craftsman in their hometown of Armavir. According to Nora, Gor showed more interest in his father's trade than his brothers did. “None of our three sons continued their father's work. Norik always said that when Gor returned from service, he would teach him and they would work together,” says Nora Aleksanyan.

On the morning of September 27, 2020, Norik was at work as usual when he learned that war had broken out. “I turned on the equipment to start work, and the house owner said, 'A war has started.' I felt my hands and feet go weak instantly. I sat in my car and was returning home when Gor called. He said he was going to the front lines. Just two days before, he had come down from the front.” Norik recalls his son saying, “I am serving the Republic of Armenia.”

In the early days of the war, Gor called every day but did not tell his parents anything about his condition or the combat situation. On October 3, Gor was wounded in the arm at the Jrarakan positions, which he informed his brother about on October 7 when he was already in Hadrut. “The last time I spoke to him was on the morning of October 10. I told him to hold on for just one more day, that a ceasefire was coming,” shares Norik Movsisyan.
