Ukraine Calls for Emergency UN Security Council Meeting
Ukraine has requested the convening of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss Russia's intentions to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. This is stated in a statement by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry described Russia's announcement as a "provocative step" that undermines the international security framework regarding nuclear deterrence. "Such intentions cannot fail to cause particular concern for the entire global community," the statement from the ministry reads.
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the United Kingdom, China, the USA, and France to take steps to "counter Kremlin's nuclear blackmail." Additionally, the agency has called on the G7 member countries and the EU to warn the Belarusian authorities about the consequences for Belarus if it agrees to host Russian tactical nuclear weapons.
"Russia once again confirms its chronic inability to be a responsible steward of nuclear weapons as a means to deter and prevent war, rather than a tool of threat and terror. The world must unite against those who threaten the future of human civilization," emphasized the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry also urged Belarusian citizens to prevent the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarusian territory, as this would turn the country into a "hostage of the Kremlin" and have "disastrous consequences" for the future of its residents.
