The Principles of Territorial Integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan as Well as the Self-Determination of Artsakh Citizens are Equal: Scholz

It is necessary to achieve a peaceful resolution regarding the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the self-determination of the citizens of Nagorno-Karabakh. Moreover, all these principles are equal. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a press conference with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

“Today we had a very good, intensive exchange of ideas about deepening relations. You have followed and seen that Prime Minister Pashinyan has initiated a comprehensive reform process in his country, and along this path, we want to continue to help Armenia within our capabilities. One important step we took last year was that Germany resumed development cooperation with Armenia. At the European level, we are working within the Eastern Partnership framework to help in the reform process here as well.

We also talked about Russia's aggressive war and its significant influence on Ukraine, as well as Armenia and the South Caucasus. I recognize that this influence is especially felt in Armenia. That is why it is even more important for Armenia and Azerbaijan to gradually move towards a long-term solution. The Prime Minister presented to me the latest developments in Nagorno-Karabakh; we are concerned about the instability along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. The status quo cannot continue, and a long-term solution must be reached for the benefit of the people.

In this regard, it is essential to achieve a peaceful resolution concerning the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the self-determination of the citizens of Nagorno-Karabakh. Moreover, all these principles are equal.

Germany supports the mediation efforts of European Council President Charles Michel, and we have also sent a European mission to the EU observation mission. Furthermore, a German federal police officer will lead that mission.

We exchanged views on the quadrilateral meeting held in Prague and also addressed trade and economic relations. Germany is the most important trade and economic partner in the European Union, and in this context, I asked the Prime Minister to encourage continuing his work against corruption. We also touched on other issues, and I thank Mr. Prime Minister for his visit. I am convinced that we will have many more questions and discussions in the future,” he said.
