The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has surpassed 33,000, according to reports from Middle Eastern media on Sunday.
In Turkey, the most recent data indicates that 29,600 people have died. Earlier reports had mentioned about 24,600 fatalities.
In Syria, the confirmed death toll stands at 3,500. The United Nations had warned earlier on Sunday that this number could double.
On Monday night, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey, followed by aftershocks, one of which registered a magnitude of 7.6. This earthquake has led to severe destruction and casualties in neighboring Syria.
