I Hope They Are Aware of This in Armenia: Zakharova on Armenian-Azerbaijani Relations
Russia has activated the entire framework of high-level trilateral agreements to facilitate the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, during a press briefing while responding to a question about what measures Russia is taking to support Armenia.
According to Zakharova, the trilateral statements made at the level of the leaders of the three countries provide a reliable basis for advancing the normalization process between Yerevan and Baku. “We take into account the allied obligations to both Armenia and Azerbaijan. Therefore, as a mediator, we continuously promote a position that allows us to effectively fulfill this function. And I hope they are aware of this in Armenia,” Zakharova noted.
Furthermore, regarding the obligations taken within the CSTO framework, Zakharova stated that all other member countries of the organization would be prepared to send a monitoring mission to Armenia if there is an interest from Yerevan. It is noteworthy that on November 23, during a CSTO summit, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that he had not signed the project on “The Declaration of the Collective Security Council of the CSTO and Joint Measures to Support the Republic of Armenia” as it had not been sufficiently finalized.
CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas later said that both political-diplomatic and military measures, including sending a mission to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border (where Azerbaijan had launched a large-scale aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia on September 13), were offered as assistance to Armenia.
