The Idea of Creating a Union State Exists Even Now: Andranik Kocharyan
There was a plan to create a Union State back in the 1990s, and such an idea still exists today. This was stated by Andranik Kocharyan, the chairman of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security of the National Assembly of Armenia, in an interview with Public Television.
“In the 1990s, signatures were being collected, and a coordination group was established; the discussion was about a union between Armenia, Russia, and Belarus. That idea has continued and has reached our days. Russia, in the process of creating a Union State with Belarus, would like to see as many participants as possible in that union,” said Kocharyan.
He announced that he cannot say that Russia has directly forced Armenia to enter the Union State, but such desires can be seen in its objectives.
It should be noted that in early October, in an interview with Haykakan Zhamanak, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, stated that there have been no discussions with Russian partners about a Union State.
On his part, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed media reports from Armenia about Russia supposedly wanting Armenia to be part of the Russia-Belarus Union State as nonsense.
