Woman Gives Birth Naturally to Stillborn Child: Response from Shengavit Medical Center

Shengavit Medical Center has issued a statement expressing its deep condolences to the family members of the woman who gave birth. The official statement reads as follows:

On November 21, 2022, a 33-year-old pregnant woman, referred to as K.M., was admitted to Shengavit Medical Center at 39-40 weeks of gestation. Upon admission, all necessary clinical-laboratory examinations were performed according to standards.

The woman gave birth naturally to a stillborn child. The third stage of labor proceeded without complications; however, 20 minutes later, the woman began experiencing early postpartum hypotonic hemorrhage. All necessary medical, instrumental, and manual interventions as per the guidelines were conducted, but were ineffective.

The head of the obstetric service was summoned, and a decision was made to urgently transfer the woman to the operating room. Considering the woman’s age, initial attempts were made to clip the uterine arteries in order to preserve the uterus. However, due to ongoing hemorrhage, the operation concluded with the removal of the uterus and its appendages (hysterectomy) to save the woman's life.

All necessary measures to ensure vital signs were maintained during the surgery, including intraoperative blood component transfusions. During the surgery, cardiac arrest was recorded but was quickly resolved through cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts by cardiologists.

The woman was subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit, where intensive treatment was administered for about 6 hours, during which cardiac arrest occurred three more times. The necessary cardiopulmonary resuscitation measures succeeded in restoring cardiac function each time.

The final cardiac arrest was recorded at 18:35. Unfortunately, despite the resuscitation efforts, it was not possible to restore cardiac function. The woman was declared biologically dead at 19:45.
