VIDEO: At least 129 dead during football match in Indonesia
In East Java province, Indonesia, during a football match, chaos erupted as fans attempted to flee, resulting in at least 129 fatalities and approximately 180 injuries, according to Reuters.
Police Chief Nico Afinta stated that fans from the losing team stormed the field to express their dissatisfaction, prompting the police to use tear gas, which led to a stampede and caused some to suffocate.
The director of one of the hospitals reported that several of the injured have head injuries, and among the deceased is a 5-year-old child.
Indonesia's Human Rights Commissioner plans to investigate the stadium's security measures, including the use of tear gas. The country’s Minister for Security, Mahfud M.D., stated on his Instagram that the stadium could accommodate 38,000 people, but 42,000 tickets were sold.
Indonesia is set to host the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in May and June next year and is one of the three countries vying to host the Asian Cup next year.
