Peskov Calls for Pressure on Kyiv: What’s the Reason?
Russia believes that all countries should exert pressure on Ukraine to prevent it from shelling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and endangering the security of all of Europe, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary for the Russian president.
“Military tensions can be alleviated through exerting pressure on the Ukrainian side to stop the shelling of this and adjacent territories,” Peskov told reporters.
The nuclear power plant is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River, near Enerhodar. It is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in terms of the number of reactors and installed capacity. Since March, it has been under the protection of Russian military forces.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has emphasized the justification for the protection of the power plant by Russian troops, citing the prevention of leaks of nuclear and radioactive materials as a priority.
Ukrainian forces continue to regularly shell Enerhodar, the surrounding villages, and the area adjacent to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
