EU Comments on Escalating Tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh
The European Union supports the "cessation of military actions" between Armenia and Azerbaijan following reports of several soldiers killed amid renewed clashes in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The escalation of tensions between the two countries has occurred "around the Lachin corridor and other areas along the contact line," according to a statement from the EU’s external actions, as reported by Euronews.
European Council President Charles Michel is simultaneously in active communication with the leaders of both countries, having spoken with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, an EU official said on Thursday. He is expected to speak with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev "soon."
"His team and the EU’s Special Representative Tóivio Klaar have been closely engaging with the leaders of both countries over recent days, urging an immediate de-escalation and progress on all agenda items on the table," a representative of the European Council stated, according to the source.
