Irish President Criticized Over Wife's Comments on Russia-Ukraine Issue
Irish President Michael Higgins has been urged to issue a statement clarifying his stance on the Ukrainian issue following a controversial letter penned by his wife, Sabina Higgins, regarding the conflict between Kyiv and Moscow, as reported by The Independent.
In her message, the First Lady of Ireland stated that military operations in the region would continue until the world "convinces Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to agree to a ceasefire and negotiations." This letter has sparked a wave of criticism from Irish parliamentarians.
Fianna Fail party member Malcolm Byrne described it as "terrible" that the message was subsequently published on the official website of the Irish president. He stated, "Higgins has the right to express his personal opinion; however, the decision to publish the letter on the country's leader's website raises serious questions. The President of Ireland should clearly declare the resolute support for the people of Ukraine and indicate that we hold Russia responsible for the conflict."
According to the publication, the Irish leader has yet to comment on the current situation.
