“There are very few countries in the world that can withstand a magnitude of 7. Even if ordinary buildings can withstand such an earthquake, many significant structures will not survive. Today, not only newly constructed buildings are increasing, but private houses are also being built in large numbers. Private houses are less vulnerable than apartment buildings. In Yerevan, new buildings can withstand earthquakes of 9 magnitude and above,” said Sos Margaryan, director of the Seismic Protection Territorial Service, during a press conference held today. He noted that Yerevan has two fault lines: on the left is the Yerevan fault and on the right is the Garni fault, which extends down to the Nakhchivan border.
