VIDEO: What is Happening at Istanbul Airport
A Russian woman waiting for her flight at Istanbul Airport told RIA Novosti that there is still no clarity regarding her possible flight. "When the flights began to be delayed, the passengers remained calm. Some were sleeping on the floor, while many were wandering around the airport without masks," the woman said.
It has been reported that passengers were sent to hotels but were asked not to leave, so they wouldn’t miss their flights. It should be noted that the operations at Istanbul Airport have been paralyzed due to heavy snowfall. According to Mynet, approximately 50 cm of snow has fallen. The latest weather forecasts indicate that the snowstorm will continue for several more days.
Due to adverse weather conditions, 729 flights have been suspended, 341 of which were incoming and 388 outgoing. Tourists have found themselves in a state of being stranded at the airport and organized a protest on-site, complaining about the terrible conditions.
According to international media reports, essential facilities have not been provided for the tourists whose flights were canceled; they were forced to sleep on the cold ground, with no food or water provided. Tourists have demanded accommodations in hotels.
