There Is a Large Wave of Infection: WHO Chief Warns
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned that the emergence of new coronavirus variants, notably the "Delta" and "Omicron" variants, could lead to a "tsunami of new cases" worldwide. According to Armenpress, he made these statements during a press briefing with journalists.
Ghebreyesus noted that the number of infections is rising due to the "Delta" and "Omicron" variants, and this increase is accompanied by a rise in hospitalization and mortality rates. He specifically highlighted the concerning fact that the "Omicron" variant is significantly more transmissible. "This could trigger a tsunami of cases, which will put significant pressure on health systems across the globe," he stated.
He pointed out that the situation regarding vaccine supply has improved globally. "However, the intense focus on booster vaccinations in wealthy countries could exacerbate the shortage of vaccines in poorer countries," warned the WHO chief, urging rich nations and vaccine manufacturers to work together to achieve the goal of vaccinating 70% of the population in every country.
