Instagram and Facebook Could Change Fundamentally if Meta Loses Lawsuit
The lawsuit filed against Meta by 30 U.S. states could significantly alter the operations of Instagram and Facebook. The states accuse the company of violating federal and state laws protecting children's privacy.
The plaintiffs are seeking up to $1 trillion in damages from Meta, as well as a series of critical changes to Instagram and Facebook. Specifically, they demand the removal of 'likes' display and endless scrolling for users under the age of 18, limitations on autoplay videos, the implementation of parental approval mechanisms, modifications to recommendation algorithms, and the removal of various filters that alter appearances.
The states argue that these features encourage children and teenagers to spend as much time as possible on social media. Meta denies the accusations and claims to have worked for many years on protecting young users.
If Meta loses, the company may have to make changes across the entire United States, as the 30 states involved in the lawsuit account for nearly two-thirds of the country's population.
Meta has already faced a setback in another case in New Mexico, where the court imposed a $942 million fine and required the company to eliminate the display of likes for users under 18, limit notifications, and implement additional safety measures.
The court also labeled Meta as a 'public nuisance,' linking the operation of its platforms to mental health issues among young people. Meta has stated it will appeal this decision.
A loss in the case involving the 30 states could lead to one of the most significant changes to Instagram and Facebook, especially for underage users.
