Aliyev Announces No Response Received from Armenia
Azerbaijan has presented a number of proposals for the normalization of relations with Armenia during the post-conflict phase, but has yet to receive a response from Yerevan. This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a speech at the forum 'The World After COVID-19' taking place in Baku, as reported by local media.
'Azerbaijan has made several proposals to Armenia to begin working on a peace treaty, as we intend to talk about peace, not war. However, unfortunately, that proposal has still gone unanswered,' said Aliyev.
He reiterated the Azerbaijani thesis that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is resolved. According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan has proposed to start demarcation and delimitation of the border with Armenia to ensure the territorial integrity of both countries. 'All of this is in line with international norms, but this issue has still not been resolved,' stated the Azerbaijani president.
He also noted that Azerbaijan is allegedly 'maximally constructive' regarding the normalization of relations with Armenia, and the further development of the situation depends on Armenia's position. 'Our position is quite clear. We are ready to start peaceful negotiations and sign a peace treaty. We want to close that chapter and define the borders, but as you can see, there is no response from Armenia. It can be said that they have maintained silence for a whole year. I believe they cannot resist Azerbaijan's constructive position,' said the Azerbaijani president.
It should be noted that Armenia has repeatedly stated the necessity of carrying out the delimitation and demarcation of borders, including the withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, to which Azerbaijan has not responded in any way.
